What is SMARTTRelief™?
SMARTTRelief™ creams are custom-compounded, non-narcotic topical creams that provide safe, fast and effective pain relief using Skin-Modulating Advanced Recovery Transdermal Technology. Located in Parry Sound, Ontario, our team at MediXtracts has spent years developing formulae to target different types of pain through topical therapy. Each formula incorporates our proprietary SMARTTRelief™ Cream Base, designed to enhance drug delivery and absorb quickly into the skin.
The SMARTTRelief™ Cream Base was engineered to optimize the transdermal penetration of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that have been shown to effectively relieve various types of pain when used topically. In our pharmacy laboratory, we exercise great care in compounding our creams. We meticulously nanosize our APIs and thoroughly homogenize our mixtures using top-of-the-line machinery, to ensure that the creams our patients receive are always smooth, lightweight, easily absorbed into the skin, and never tacky.

Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients
SMARTTRelief™ creams incorporate various combinations of active pharmaceutical ingredients that each play a role in relieving your pain.
KETOPROFEN
Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to treat pain and inflammation. Topical ketoprofen has been shown to reduce pain associated with acute musculoskeletal conditions (such as sprains, strains and overuse injuries)⁽¹⁾, delayed-onset muscle soreness⁽²⁾, osteoarthritis⁽³⁾, rheumatoid arthritis⁽⁴⁾, and nonarticular rheumatisms (such as tendinitis).⁽⁵⁾ Accordingly, topical ketoprofen may also improve range of mobility, as is expected with reduced pain and inflammation of muscles and joints.
AMITRIPTYLINE
Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that is commonly used to treat neuropathic pain.⁽⁶⁾ Topical amitriptyline has been shown to provide relief for patients with chronic neuropathic pain and is typically used in compounded creams that aim to provide pain relief.⁽⁷⁾⁽⁸⁾
LIDOCAINE
Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that has a numbing effect. Among its many benefits, topical lidocaine is often used to treat peripheral neuropathic pain, pain associated with post-herpetic neuralgia, and post-operative pain.⁽⁹⁾
CYCLOBENZAPRINE
Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxant that is used to treat pain associated with painful musculoskeletal conditions, such as fibromyalgia.⁽¹⁰⁾ It is commonly prescribed to treat back and neck pain.⁽¹¹⁾ Cyclobenzaprine is frequently used in compounded pain creams and has been shown to relieve pain associated with muscle spasms when used topically.⁽¹²⁾
BACLOFEN
Baclofen is a muscle relaxant that has analgesic pain-relieving properties.⁽¹³⁾
Topical baclofen has been shown to effectively reduce neuropathic pain and can be used as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, oral pain medications.⁽¹⁴⁾
GABAPENTIN
Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug that is used to treat both seizures and neuropathic pain.⁽¹⁵⁾ In recent studies, topical gabapentin has been shown to effectively reduce neuropathic pain and minimize the risk of side effects that may arise through oral consumption of the drug.⁽¹⁶⁾⁽¹⁷⁾⁽¹⁸⁾
